The 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne "Vietnam Odyssey
Book" CD

The 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division,
was formed in February 1964. It prepared itself for its role of the "Always
First" Brigade by participation in airborne operations conducted in Iran,
the Mojave Desert, and other U.S. training exercise. During the
month of May, 1965, the Brigade was alerted for Vietnam. A Brigade
Task Force was authorized to conduct combat operations consisting of Brigade
Headquarters; the 1st and 2nd Airborne Infantry Battalions of the 327th Infantry
and the 1st of the 502nd Infantry; the 2nd Battalion (Airborne) of the 320th
Artillery, the Brigade Support Battalion (Quartermaster, Medical, Maintenance,
Administrative); Troop A, 2d Squadron, 17th Airborne Cavalry; Co. A, 326th
Airborne Engineers; a platoon of the Division Military Police Co., a Military
Intelligence Detachment, a Radio Research Unit; and a platoon from Co. B, 501st
Signal Battalion. The Brigade embarked from Oakland Army Terminal on
9 July 1965 aboard the USNS General Leroy Eltinge, arriving at Cam Ranh Bay,
Republic of Vietnam, on 29 July 1965. The combat accomplishments of
the 1st Brigade and its travels in Vietnam since that time have become history
and legend.
